The characteristics of magnetic viscosity and susceptibility disaccommodation of a submarine basalt containing multidomain (MD) titanium-rich titanomagnetite are found to be quite dissimilar at room temperature. Thus, the viscous induced magnetization (VIM) of submarine basalts in situ is not due to diffusion but to thermal fluctuations. Experiments above room temperature show that a linear log t extrapolation of laboratory measurements at room temperature yields an underestimate of the Brunhes VIM. A theoretical calculation of this projected VIM is difficult because of the thermal dependence of the activation volume of barriers in MD low-Curie point minerals. ¿ American Geophysical Union 1993 |
