An algorithm for predicting large earthquakes is proposed. The reciprocal ratio (mri) of the residual seismic moment to the total moment release in a region is used for imaging seismic moment precursors. Peaks in mri predict recent major earthquakes, including the 1985 Michoac¿n, 1985 central Chile, and 1992 Eureka, California earthquakes. ¿ American Geophysical Union 1993
