X-ray synchrotron study of iron heated between 1400 to 2200 K over a pressure range of 40 to 60 gigapascals confirms previous reports of the transformation of the hexagonal closest packed (HCP) phase of iron (ϵ) to the double HCP Iron (&bgr;). The study extends the stability range of the new phase &bgr; to the highest pressure range yet achieved for such transformation. ¿ American Geophysical Union 1996 |
