Wensink, H. (1965). Paleomagnetic stratigraphy of younger basalts and intercalated Plio-Pleistocene tillites in Iceland. Geologische Rundschau 54(1): 364-384.
The Graue Stufe in eastern Iceland forms the upper part of a pile of plateau basalts some eight kilometers thick. The lava series contains tholeiites, porphyritic basalts, and olivine basalts in irregular succession. This formation contains many clastic intercalations of volcanic, fluvioglacial, fluviatile, lacustrine, and morainic deposits and tillites. In the paleomagnetic stratigraphy, basalt flows with a main direction of magnetization like that of the present are called normal (N); rocks with a completely inverted direction of magnetization are called reversed (R). These series are numbered down from the top. The lowermost tillites occur in the middle N (sub 2) series and are of pre-Quaternary age. Glaciations in Iceland must have occurred in the Pliocene. Dating of the geomagnetic boundaries is not exact; the R (sub 1) /N (sub 1) boundary is sometimes correlated with the Guenz-Mindel interglacial phase of the Pleistocene. At least five tillites are intercalated in the R (sub 1) series; correlations between the tillites of this series and the lower Pleistocene phases of Europe cannot be drawn.
