Samples of bricks and shards from localities in India were first dated by standard procedures, and their thermoremanent magnetization was then measured. The results are tabulated, and although some random scatter is apparent, it can be suggested that the ancient magnetic field strength of India was 15 percent less than the present 1300 years ago, 10 percent lower 3000 years ago, and about 30 percent lower 4000 years ago. The method is discussed in some detail. |
