The electron precipitation flux and energy flux for a filled loss cone at the top of the auroral electron acceleration region have been calculated for the actual height for the top of the acceleration region. The resulting flux and energy flux are thus found to be more than sufficient to account for the aurora, thereby contradicting Knight's well-known theory for electron precipitation during an auroral substorm. ¿ 1998 American Geophysical Union
