We recently [Mursula et al., 1997> studied a series of bursts of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves observed by the Viking satellite and on ground, and showed that these bursts can not be explained by the bouncing wave packet model. Here we show that the burst structure is due to simultaneous Pc 3 waves of upstream origin. ¿ 1998 American Geophysical Union
