The instrumentation of a new MMS on the NASA DC-8 aircraft is briefly described. A method to compute the turbulent dissipation rate, ϵ, is discussed in light of some apparent inconsistencies between high and medium altitude aircraft data and available theory. Examples of turbulence measurements during encounters of a wake vortex, a field of wave clouds, and persistent contrails are illustrated. ¿ 1998 American Geophysical Union |
