By examining profiles of vertical velocity in the arctic mesosphere determined by the European Incoherent Scatter (EISCAT) VHF radar, it is possible to estimate rates of dissipation of kinetic energy. These rates are intended as first approximations to the turbulent energy dissipation rate. The values are averaged in such a way as to obtain diurnal variations for each of four seasons and periodicity emerges which we associate with tides. ¿ 1998 American Geophysical Union
