Combining observations and model simulations, the equatorial upper ocean heat budget is closed to diagnose the cause of the 1945--93 sea surface temperature (SST) trend. The equatorial Pacific SST exhibits a clear warming trend, in spite of a cooling trend in the net downward surface heat flux. This warming is caused primarily by the reduction of wind-driven cold ocean current. ¿ 2000 American Geophysical Union |
