Under certain circumstances, ELF radiation from power lines is able to very mildly heat the electrons in the upper atmosphere via ELF wave/electron interaction. The electron temperature increase for O-mode heating is <1%. However, the significance of the heating is a function of the line construction and also the character of the underlying ground resistivity with the greatest heating effect occurring over a resistive earth. ¿ 1998 American Geophysical Union
