The remanent magnetization of samples from 60 Samoan sites is regarded as stable enough to indicate polarity, but only 16 sites are considered to be reliable indicators of the actual direction of the past geomagnetic field. Normal and reversed directions occur, the mean direction of which (5 degrees , -32 degrees is similar to the axial dipole field in Samoa. The scatter of directions about the mean is greater than that expected from secular variation rates during the last 200 years, suggesting that secular variation in the Samoan area has not been abnormal when averaged over the 2-2.5 m.y. during which the rocks were formed. Samples from Tonga are stable but too few for detailed interpretation; results from 'Eua suggest tectonic instability on the edge of the Tonga trench before the late Eocene. |
