Isabela, westernmost of the Galapagos islands, Ecuador, is mainly composed of basaltic lavas and pyroclastic deposits ejected from five major and numerous subsidiary craters, several of which have erupted during the past century. Sulfur-bearing solfataras are associated with three of the five main volcanos. Volcanism is believed to be advancing southwestward along one of two major fracture systems whose alignment has been inferred from the positions of the principal vents in the archipelago. |
