Contrary to what is sometimes assumed, it is mathematically impossible to write down a magnetic field of a current system that is not closed. When the Biot-Savart law is integrated over a current that ostensibly is not closed, the resulting magnetic field is that of a system containing a closure current which is uniquely determined but may neither be physically realistic nor correspond to the desired approximation. ¿ 1999 American Geophysical Union |
