Vasyliunas, V.M. (1999). A note on current closure. Journal of Geophysical Research 104: doi: 10.1029/1999JA900298. issn: 0148-0227.

Contrary to what is sometimes assumed, it is mathematically impossible to write down a magnetic field of a current system that is not closed. When the Biot-Savart law is integrated over a current that ostensibly is not closed, the resulting magnetic field is that of a system containing a closure current which is uniquely determined but may neither be physically realistic nor correspond to the desired approximation. ¿ 1999 American Geophysical Union
