A discussion of the chemical changes involved in the formation of Hawaiian soils. Lyons presents analyses for soils, fresh lavas, and lavas altered by weathering, including one saprolite. He compares fresh lava to weathered lava and to soil, holding Al (sub 2) O (sub 3) + total iron constant.
