In a flank eruption on the upper part of the east rift zone of Kilauea in December 1962, 426,000 cu yd of lava were erupted from 6 fissures extending en echelon 2 miles eastward from Aloi crater. Much of the lava, ponded temporarily in that crater, drained back into the fissure in the pit crater floor. The summit of Kilauea subsided during the eruption and the ground near the eruptive center rose more than 2.5 feet. Apparent tensional opening of the rift zone, that allows magma to drain from the summit reservoir, probably results from a combination of southward movement of the flank south of the rift zone under gravity, and inflation of the southward-dipping rift zone by the magma. |
