In the light of the results of this investigation into the chemistry and mineralogy of the hawaiites and mugearites, we may describe hawaiites mineralogically as being characterized by strongly zoned feldspars ranging from calcic andesine to a feldspar of lime-anorthoclase type, the two types of feldspar being present in roughly equal proportions or with plagioclase dominant. In mugearites the plagioclase is more sodic, and the alkali feldspar (lime anorthoclase) is present in greater amount than the plagioclase; less commonly, mugearites may contain interstitial soda sanidine. Chemically, the hawaiite has normative plagioclase in the andesine range and carries significant normative orthoclase, while mugearite has normative plagioclase in the oligoclase range with still higher amounts of normative orthoclase.' |
