A study of the nighttime dissociative recombination production of O(1D) is reported. The data were gathered by a rocket payload carrying an ion mass spectrometer, Langmuir probe, retarding potential analyzer, and 6300-¿ photometer. The specific recombination rate to produce O(1D) atoms is deduced to be 2.8¿1.0¿10-8 cm3 s-1 and is 30% of the total laboratory rate. The quenching rate at 250 km is 4.4¿1.5¿10-3 s-1.
