Deans, A.J., Shepherd, G.G. and Evans, W.F.J. (1976). A rocket measurement of the O2(b1Sg+ -X3Sg-)(0-0) atmospheric band in aurora. Journal of Geophysical Research 81: doi: 10.1029/JA081i034p06227. issn: 0148-0227.

A rocket observation of the O2(b1&Sgr;g+ -X3&Ggr;g-)(0-0) atmospheric band emission at 7619 ¿ has been made in aurora. The observed integrated intensities of the O2(b1&Ggr;g+)(0-0), O I 5577-¿, and N2+4278-¿ emissions were 28, 40, and 6 kR, respectively. The observed I (7619 ¿)/I(4278 ¿) ratio of 4.5 is an order of magnitude lower than that obtained in recent theoretical calculations or deduced from ground-based photometric measurements. A revised calculations using recently measured auroral secondary electron spectra and a low atomic oxygen density appropriate to the flight suggests that the present result is consistent with b1&Ggr;g+ excitation largely by energy transfer from O(1D).
