A scheme is proposed to limit spacecraft electrostatic charging in planetary magnetospheres by releasing electrons accumulated on conductive surfaces by means of a field emission probe. This device presents several advantages over thermoionic systems such as electron guns and heated filamtes: it is entirely passive, and its weight and size are insignificant. In situ plasma diagnostic can even be performed with this probe by using very little extra equipment.
