The maxima and minima that have been observed in the storm time equatorial pitch angle distributions of radiation belt electrons and protons can be attributed to the combination of a spatially localized time-dependent source and dispersion by azimuthal drift. A numerical analysis illustrates the variety in the evolution of the pitch angle distributions of trapped particles that can be produced simply by invoking different time and space profiles for the injection event.
