Ponape, a dissected shield volcano in the Caroline islands, is composed of alternating basalt flows and pyroclastics, whose types form an alkaline suite, with soda predominating over potash, representing crystallization differentiation of an olivine basalt parent magma. Quartz-bearing rocks are absent. |
