The homogeneity of the Wolf number series is discussed. It is pointed out that observations are irregular and often scanty before about 1810 and that the constancy from one observer to another in counting the sunspots cannot be guaranteed for old observations. Thus careful attention needs to be paid to the quality of the data when long-term periodicities are being estimated.
