Oldenburg, D.W. (1978). A quantitative technique for modeling ionospheric and magnetospheric current distributions. Journal of Geophysical Research 83. doi: 10.1029/JA083iA07p03320. issn: 0148-0227.

Linear inverse theory has been used to generate specific height-integrated current distributions which recreate observed ground-based magnetometer data. The current distributions are found by minimizing functional forms subject to the condition that the observations are reproduced to within a desired accuracy. A theoretical example shows that the 'flattest' model might be particularly insensitive to random errors in the observations.
