Sala y Gomez (Chile) is a low volcanic islet 415 kilometers east-northeast of Easter island on an east-west-trending ridge off the north-trending east Pacific Rise. The islet is the subaerial peak of a very large seamount. Two lava flows are exposed, but no volcanic vents have been found. The lower flow is a red to dark gray andesitic olivine basalt extensively altered in parts of the upper surface. Above this is a discontinuous calcareous deposit, highly fossiliferous and badly leached. The upper flow is dense fine-grained andesitic olivine basalt whose surface resembles typical aa-type lava flows. The composition of the two flows is similar.
