A paleomagnetic reconnaissance of the New Hebrides and New Caledonia indicates that the Cenozoic lavas and tuffs in the New Hebrides islands, probably of Pleistocene age rather than Pliocene as previously supposed, are suitable for paleomagnetic research; but the New Caledonia rocks that were examined seem unsuitable. It is possible that suitable rocks might be found in a more intensive study of the serpentinite complex. No detailed work was attempted.
