From the compositional variations observed with the neutral atmosphere composition experiment on Ogo 6 and a simplified model of thermospheric dynamics, global average values of non-EUV heating are deduced. These are 0.19--0.25 mW m-2 for quiet days and 0.44--0.58 mW m-2 for ordinary days.
