On June 29, 1974, at 1514 local solar time a nitric oxide photometer and a cryogenic neutral gas mass spectrometer were flown aboard the same rocket above Wallops Island, Virginia, as part of the NASA/Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories Aladdin 74 program. Altitude profiles of the nitric oxide density between 100 and 220 km were obtained by both experiments. The profiles agree within the experimental errors, this agreement proving the reliability of both methods. Nitric oxide emission from the rocket motor can be excluded as a perturbation source for the measurements. |
