A preliminary investigation into the occurrence of manganese nodules and crusts southeast of Tarawa, western Kiribati, has shown the manganese nodules occur at five of the eleven localities sampled at abyssal depths. Richer and denser deposits may lie to the east of the area studies, on the abyssal plain north of the Phoenix Islands.
