On the basis of plasmasphere column content models, Davies et al [1979> deduced the existence of ionosphere/magnetosphere coupling fluxes of order 1¿1013 el m-2 s-1 per hemisphere, driven by compressed tubes of plasma in the course of an E¿B drift. Such large fluxes should be easily detectable on a VLF whistler mode experiment but have not been seen. Data from that experiment are presented that show inward drifts at L=2.3 accompanied at times by small upward fluxes. This is contrary to some theoretical predictions but is in agreement with recent measurements regarding the dynamics of the ionosphere at latitudes approaching the plasmapause. Calculations show column content measurements may be insensitive to compression effects even in the absence of fluxes.
