The 430-MHz radar at Arecibo has been used to observe the ion component of the incoherent scatter spectrum in the mesosphere. Vertical profiles of the zonal winds deduced from the radar backscatter show excellent agreement with profiles obtained from meteorological rocket soundings from Antigua. Meridional winds and the spectrum parameters (width and relative power) observed on a summer day exhibit wavelike structures which move downward with time. The wavelike structures in the spectrum parameters, pronounded particularly in the D region ledge, are discussed somewhat qualitatively, in relation to transport processes of neutral and ionized particles by the atmospheric motions.
