Two factors which can contribute to proton anisotropy in the high-speed solar wind are investigated. We present evidence that observed proton T ⊥<T∥ anisotropies are maintained locally by plasma instabilities driven by proton and helium beams. The transfer of beam energy to T⊥ by means of these instabilities is shown to be sufficient to account for the aforementioned proton temperature anisotropy. |
