Two factors which can contribute to proton anisotropy in the high-speed solar wind are investigated. We present evidence that observed proton T<T∥ anisotropies are maintained locally by plasma instabilities driven by proton and helium beams. The transfer of beam energy to T by means of these instabilities is shown to be sufficient to account for the aforementioned proton temperature anisotropy.
