It is suggested that the ion drift wave could be one of the possible candidates for the low-frequency electrostatic fluctuations at the magnetopause. Nonlinear mode coupling of ion drift waves can create purely growing convective cells. The latter may cause anomalous plasma diffusion across the ambient magnetic field.
