A simple dynamical model of the equatorial F region is presented in which this section of the ionosphere is coupled to the E region, which is represented by a thin horizontal current layer, and the vertical current density at the base of the F region is taken to be composed entirely of current normal to the geomagnetic field lines, according to a previous findings by the authors. The new boundary condition for the current density at the interface between the E and F layer simplies the system of equations. The model is applied to calculate the zonal ion velocity and the vertical current at the boundary between the E and F regions. |
