In this brief report we present our latest line width values for the solar He i lines at 584 and 537 ¿ determined from a curve-of-growth technique. The measurements were conducted with a rocket-borne spectrometer viewing the full disk of the sun on August 10, 1982, at a zenith angle of ~30¿ and along a trajectory for which the peak altitude was ~325 km. The average of the 11 measurements obtained during the flight gave a full width at half maximum of 97¿15 m¿ and 132¿30 m¿ for the 584- and 537-¿ lines respectively. The solar activity indices for the day of the flight were F10⋅7=209.5 and RI=155, and were significantly higher than they were during our previous flights on November 27, 1974, September 29, 1977, and September 30, 1980. The solar flux at 584 ¿ was also measured and changed considerably from flight to flight in accordance with solar indices. Comparison of solar line width data may indicate two possible trends although the measurement errors to overlap and improved statistics are required. The suggested trends are that (1) the helium line widths may decrease with increasing solar activity and (2) the n=3-1 line of He i may be broader than the n=2-1 line. |
