The relationship of the polarity of natural magnetization of igneous rocks with that of rocks that they have baked suggests that reversals of the earth's magnetic field have taken place many times in the past few hundred million years. The evidence also indicates that the occurrence of self-reversal mechanisms in the magnetic materials in rocks is a relatively rare phenomenon. |
