In the 1 1/2 years of broadband VLF data available from the receiver aboard the SCATHA satellite, the majority of observations of electrostatic emissions show fine structure. This fine structure consistes of several distinct emissions bands between electron gyrofrequency (fc) harmonics. Typically three fine structure bands comprise one emission band. Most of the SCATHA observations include only the passband between fc and 2fc. However, a few observations obtained in regions of lower geomagnetic field intensity show similar fine structure in emission bands up to the passband 3fc and 4fe. This short note reports the observation of fine structure in electron cyclotron harmonic waves and the corresponding in situ electron distribution functions. A significant number of these observations (~70%) occurred at times when the electron pitch angle distribution had a pronounced minimum at 90¿ in one or more energy channels in the 1- to 20-keV range. |
