An apparent response of atmospheric zonal index to the passage past the earth of solar magnetic sector boundaries is detected in the Australia/New Zealand/Southeast Pacific region during the period 1957--1978. The apparent response, revealed by the method of superposed epoch analysis, is highly nonrandom, the statistical significance of which is assessed in a number of different ways. All approaches concur in showing that it is extremely unlikely that the apparent response could be produced by a chance mechanism. |
