Dolginov [this issue> disagrees with the conclusions of Russell et al. [1984> that the Mars 3 data obtained on January 21, 1982, can be interpreted in terms of a draped magnetic field pattern. He bases his disagreement on his belief that Russell et al. [1984> incorrectly assigned the polarity of the Y component of the magnetic field, that they misidentified the location of the bow shock, and that new analysis of simultaneously obtained Mars 2 and 3 data unambiguously proves that Mars has an intrinsic magnetotail. In his comment, Dolginov presents data that was unavailable to us at the time we wrote our original paper. This data, shown in Figure 2 of Dolginov's paper [this issue> contains the longest continuous stretch of simultaneous Mars 2 data that have been published. As such, it is very germane not only to the interpretation of the simultaneous Mars 2 data but also to determining whether or not we erred in our interpretation of the BY polarity.
