We point out that, although slow-mode shocks produce upstream particles and waves in a manner similar to fast-mode shocks, they are not capable of accelerating these particles as fast-mode shocks are known to do. The crucial difference is that the self-generated fast waves upstream of a slow shock are able to escape from the shock and therefore do not compress the energetic particle distribution.
