At the inner edge of the ring current (3--7 RE), the three dimensional plasma instrument from the AMPTE/IRM satellite sometimes obtains measurements of the pressure gradient and the resulting diamagnetic drift in the 20 eV to 40 keV ions [LaBelle et al., 1988>. To the extent that the boundary may be considered a stationary structure moving past the satellite, a comparison of these measurements, along with simultaneous density and magnetic field measurements, allows the radial (parallel to the pressure gradient) ring current velocity to be inferred. In this work, 11 ring current traversals have been selected from the 1985--1986 AMPTE/IRM data set corresponding to 1700--2200 LT. Only relative quiet times have been considered since large errors may be incurred during active times if the ion composition is not monitored. These cases show a correlation between the radial motion of the ring current inner edge and its radial distance. It is speculated that during quiet times the motion may be purely convective, which implies westward electric fields of the order of 0.2--0.3 mV/m, consistent with previous measurements in this region. ¿ American Geophysical Union 1989 |
