It is suggested that MgSiO3 the major component of the earth's mantle, may undergo a ferroelectric-like phase transformation as it transforms into the orthorhomic perovskite phase deep in the mantle. The anomalous electric conductivity and acoustic discontinuity observed in the same region of the mantle are interpreted, respectively, in terms of the anomalous dieelectric and soft mode phenomenon know to accompany ferroelectric-like transformation. |
