Microcracks and joints in rock are assumed to be rough surfaces in contact. Compressibility is found to depend on the parameter Ah/V, where h is the standard deviation of the asperity heights and A/V is the total crack area per unit volume. Theoretical results agree well with experimental studies of the deformation of an in situ joint under normal stress and the change of compressibilty with confining pressure for several rocks.
