It is shown that the shear modulus and density profiles of layered, isotropic elastic earth can be uniquely inferred from the displacement of the surface due to an impulsive SH line source. An inversion algorithm is presneted which constructs these profiles from the surface data. Two illustrative examples are given in which the shear modulus and density profiles are reconstructed analytically from an analytic surface data.
