The interaction between magnetic fields and convection was first modeled by considering the effect of a solid rotor on an otherwise uniform magnetic field. This approach has subsequently been extended by considering convection in an electrically conducting Boussinesq fluid in the presence of an imposed magnetic field. Nonlinear solutions for two-dimensional magneto-convection show both steady and oscillatory behavior. The results of a series of numerical experiments at a fixed Rayleigh number of 105 are presented and contrasted with predictions based on linear theory. |
