Katz, J.I. (1986). A model of propagating brittle failure in heterogeneous media. Journal of Geophysical Research 91: doi: 10.1029/JB080i010p10412. issn: 0148-0227.

I consider a nonelastodynamic model for the propagation of brittle failure in a heterogeneously stressed medium. Numerical simulation shows a power law distribution of failure sizes, with a slope not far different from the size distribution of seismic events. The time history of calculated failure activity is not consistent with observed seismic behavior, and some explanations and implications are discussed.
