We would like to thank J. N. Boland for his interest in our study of the deformation of clinopyroxenite and acknowledge two errors in our Table 2 <Kirby and Kronenberg, 1984>. The first is a typographical error in the tabulated value of shortening strain for experiment N-315, and the second involves a problematical experiment, N-256, for which we failed to correct the differential stress measurement for an anomalously large pressure rise. We take this opportunity to correct these errors and to answer questions raised by Boland. However, our principal conclusions, based upon the results of 54 independent experiments, are not significantly modified. In his comment on our paper, Boland includes several criticisms concerning (1) reproducibility and selection of data, (2) choice of rheological relationships and least squares fitting, (3) semibrittle behavior and instabilities, and (4) interpretations of rate-limiting deformation mechanisms. We consider these individually, attempting, though with difficulty, to follow the organization outlined by Boland's comment. |
