Eckhardt and coworkers have taken gravity measurements on and around a TV tower in North Carolina. They have interpreted these as evidence for a non-Newtonian force. As orignially reported, the discrepancy between prediction and measurement reaches about 500 μGal at the top of the 550-m-high tower. We have already given preliminary results suggesting that most of this discrepancy could have come from inadequate modeling of the local terrain. Here we present our final result. We show that about 3/4 of the effect comes from the terrain within 20 km of the tower. Left is somewhat more than 100 μGal for the contribution of the far terrain, for measurement error, or for a ''fifth'' force. ¿ American Geophysical Union 1990 |
