Walton, J.R., Heymann, D., Yaniv, A., Edgerley, D. and Rowe, M.W. (1976). Cross sections for He and Ne isotopes in natural Mg, Al, and Si, He isotopes in CaF2, Ar isotopes in natural Ca, and radionuclides in natural Al, Si, Ti, Cr, and stainless steel induced by 12- to 45-MeV protons. Journal of Geophysical Research 81: doi: 10.1029/JB081i032p05689. issn: 0148-0227.

In 12 irradiations at the variable energy cyclotron of Texas A&M University, stacks of thin Mg, Al, Si, Ca, CaF2, Ti, and stainless steel foils were bombarded with 1015--1017 protons with energie of 12--45 MeV. Cross sections for He and Ne in natural Mg, Al, and Si, for He in CaF2, and for Ar in natural Ca were determined by mass spectrometric measurements of the inert gases. Cross sections for formation of 22Na in natural Al and Si, 48V in natural Ti, and 51Cr, 52Mn, and 57Co in stainless steel (type 302) were determined by measurements of the radioactive products by standard &ggr; ray spectrometry. From the stainless steel foil data, cross sections for production of 51Cr and 52Mn in natural Cr were deduced. The results reveal strong similarities between the Mg-Ne, Si-Ne, and Ca-Ar systems. The most salient characteristic of the Al-Ne system is the relatively low yield of 21Ne.
