In calculations of the effective elastic moduli of heterogeneous materials, special care must be taken if one of the components is a liquid. Connections between liquid-filled regions (pores) can lead to a substantial reduction of the moduli. This effect can be incorporated into the computations with use of a theorem due to Gassmann <1951>.
